#IGFriendPortraits
I started drawing portraits of people from Instagram on March 26th 2013. The idea started as an excersise to keep me actively drawing. It immediately snow-balled into a series of people (most of who I will probably never meet in person) requesting that I draw them next. I have always enjoyed doing portraits, and social media has given me a never ending source of pictures of faces. Most of these drawings are based on "selfies", meaning a picture of one's face that is taken by one's self. I have taken something that is narcissistic, common, and disposable and turned it into a unique piece of a greater collective. Each piece stands alone quite nicely, but the true feel of the work is activated when they are viewed in close proximity with each other. Looking at a block of them is very similar to the layout of Instagram itself, a mosaic of color, texture, and personality.
